The seasons colors are red and green. Holly is used as decoration for this festival, originally named for the dark underground Crone-goddess Holle, or Hel, from whose womb the sun arose. The red berry symbolized the Goddess’ holy blood, shaper of all life, according to the oldest beliefs. The evergreen leaves of the holly represent ongoing life, retaining vitality through the winter, with an implied promise of immortality.

The Winter Solstice has long been associated with the birth of a ‘Divine child or King’ long before the rise of Christianity. Since the Sun represents the male deity, this time is honored as the return of the sun god, where he is reborn of the Goddess. Yule is centered around the idea of rebirth, assisting the newly born sun to grow in strength when it emerged from the dark womb of night. It is a time for reflection and celebration as we think about where we have been and anticipate the new Sun and its promise for increasing light, as the days start to slowly become longer and warmer.

The theme for Yule, is re-birth, with emphasis on the divine birth-giver rather than the one born, as in the Christian revision. The birth-giver is Hel, or the Dark Goddess, also known as Mother Night, Hecate, Myrrha, Cerridwen, Cybele-Nana, Black Demeter and many other names. Savior cults, such as of those of Jesus, Mithras and Attis, use this traditional birth season for their heroes and dying-resurrecting ‘god men’. In ancient cultures, they celebrated the birth of a divine child at this time, nine months after the god’s death and re-conception (resurrection) at the Spring Equinox.

The Cult of Paul and the Origen of Christianity

If we think about it logically, without overly emotional fundamentalism and from the historical perspective  :-D  the followers of Jesus remained Jews after his death, as did those of Jesus brother James the Just. They did not become members of Pauls new Christian religion. Christianity was a cult developed by Saul of Tarsus to attract pagan converts throughout the broader Roman Empire people who were already inclined toward nature based dying and resurrecting Gods. These pagans are the Gentiles that are referred to in the New Testament. The word Gentiles has become respectable in Christian thinking because it is taken as being a Jewish description of Christians, but it meant no such thing at the time. It was a word the followers of Jesus and James used to describe those who did not believe in the God of the Jews.

Dying Resurrecting God

Paul was not intimate friends with Jesus original followers, students or family. Paul and James the Just quickly fell out with each other. The story Paul spread was based on Roman tastes in theology and barely related to the actions of Jesus and his followers. I have often pondered what Jesus actually thinks about all this, converting, evangelizing, smiting and killing in his name I am sure he is impressed (not). In Cyprus, Egypt, Turkey and Rome it was Pauls followers who scribed the Gospels. In Israel the people that Jesus had once led became followers of James, who opposed the Pauls new religion. The NT tells the story of Jesus from the perspective of Paul, and it tries to establish the idea that the followers of the crucified Jesus were Christians in their churches. They were not = they were Jews.

The Mediterranean and the Middle East are full of ancient stories of dying ~ resurrecting gods, who dies annually in order to “renew” or bring “salvation” to the people with his blood.  He returns later in the year, this being called the Myth of the Return.  He is born to us each year at the Winter Solstice in the form of the Divine Child, when the sun is “re-born” each year and the light returns to the darkened winter world and the days become longer.  Then in the Spring, He dies so his blood can save us.

Pauls new religion of the Risen Christ was easy for pagans to accept it was far from original and built upon well established traditions. This new cult of Christianity was squarely rooted in the Canaanite peasant theology of dying and resurrecting nature gods. The nature cult created in the name of Jesus came less from the beliefs of his real followers than it did from Pauls own upbringing in Tarsus. Every autumn, the young Saul would have watched the great funeral pyre on which the local god was ritually burnt. God was now dead, but he would arise again in the spring (Easter). The idea of blood was horrific to all Jews, and blood was something to be avoided at all costs, yet Pauls concept of Jesus rested on the power of his spilt blood, and of course on the sacrificial impulse which had driven the worship of Mithras. Even today we ritually drink the blood of Christ.  This concept of drinking ritual blood of a sacrificial human victim was as far removed from Jewish thinking but was well accepted practice among the pagans.

• He is God made flesh; the savior and ‘Son of God’
• His father is God and his mother is a mortal virgin.
• He is born in a cave or humble cow shed on the 25th of December before three shepherds.
• He offers his followers the chance to be born again through the rites of baptism.
• He miraculously turns water into wine at a marriage ceremony.
• He rides triumphantly into town on a donkey while people wave palm leaves to honor him.
• He dies at Easter time as a sacrifice for the sins of the world.
• After his death he descends to Hell, then on the third day he rises from the dead and ascends to heaven in glory.
• His followers await his return as the judge during the Last Days.
• His death and resurrection are celebrated by a ritual meal of bread and wine which symbolize his body and blood.

Tamuz - another resurrecting god

These attributes not only fit into the life of Jesus, but into the myths associated with Mithras, Adonis, Dumuzi, Hercules and Osiris. Adonis and Dumuzi ~ Middle Eastern fertility gods who died every year during the Spring planting season to fertilize the crops for the “salvation of all.”  Adonis’ death was mourned in a special cave shrine in Bethlehem where legends also said he was born.  Tammuz ~ was ritually resurrected each Spring after a three day descent into hell.  He was buried each year in a garden tomb.  A priestess, representing his wife, would go alone to the garden tomb and find it empty. Worship of Tammuz is mentioned in the Old Testament. Hercules was born of a heavenly sky-god (Zeus) and a mortal woman.  His official title was “Prince of Peace.”  Jesus was born of Yahweh, sky-god of the Hebrews, and a “mortal woman,” Mary. Osiris is connected to the annual cycle of fertility and renewal of the spring flooding of the Nile. His loyal nurturing mother is the goddess Isis. Hmmmm, interesting stuff.

Paul, and his writings, influenced all of the early church fathers, who more followed the teachings of Paul than those of Jesus.  Some of the teachings Paul has brought us include:

Women = Bad.  Jesus has to be celibate, even though all other Jewish Rabbis were required to be married. Most of the Gnostic texts that detail Jesus human side and relationship with the Magdalene were systematically destroyed by the church fathers. Why? What were they trying to hide?

Salvation. We are horrible humans and unworthy of life and must wash ourselves in divine blood just as Roman soldiers would ritualistically wash themselves in the blood of Oxen at Mithraic temples.

Hell:  Pauls teaching also helped invent hell. This was unknown to Jesus and the Hebrew religion.  The Christian church fathers misinterpreted the Jewish parables of Gehenna, a shadowy “void” place of soul transition and departing, and turned Gehenna into Hell.  

The Devil:  The Church fathers created the image of a horned Devil, giving him horns like Kernernos, the pagan God of harvest and forest, who wore horns as a mark of his kinship with the deer, and other animals with horns. The Church of the Middle Ages, facing stiff competition with the pagan religion, “demonized” these gods.  They gave Satan, (whose name comes from Shatan, the Hebrew angel of death, “adversary,” and “obstacle”) horns like the pagan gods, hoping to totally stamp out their worship.

In 62 CE, James was murdered and Paul died soon afterwards. According to the historian Josephus, the Jews rose up against Rome in 66 CE. Rising up against Rome was never a good idea, and Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 CE. Before this time, there was no Jewish orthodoxy, only disparate groups of Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes, Zealots and Christians. It took another 200 years before Christians ceased to be just a strange variety of Judaism and the greatest story ever sold began to flourish. Almost three hundred years after Paul, the Roman Emperor Constantine adopted Christianity, merged it with his favorite pagan religion, Mithraism, and made it the official Roman Catholic Church.

Mithras Slaying the Bull (Taurus)

The Christian bible is made up of old and new testaments. The first covers the history of the world from the creation through Malachi, the last of the prophets who spoke of the return of Elijah, the forerunner of the coming Messiah. The NT covers the period from just before the birth of Jesus to a period about 75 years later, when the Jewish war broke out. So the bible chronicles Gods interaction with His chosen people for all time right up to their near obliteration at the hands of the Romans. After that the Bible simply stops. WHY?  It did not stop being written: in the same way that the Dead Sea Scrolls were lost, so the ongoing story just did not get bound into the official versions and more discoveries of these hushed texts will be found.

The families who considered themselves to have a special relationship with God continued to document their journey. The bloodlines that produced the high priests survived and continued to record their progress towards creating the kingdom of God on earth. Many escaped to Europe, as members of the Diaspora, there to found many of the families that would become pre-eminent throughout the Middle Ages.  In France, these families came to control Anjou, Champagne, Normandy and Burgundy and from France comes stories of the Knights Templar, the Cathars, the troubadours, the works of Chretien de Troyes and the san grail, the blood royal the grail.

This in no way, shape or form takes away from the validity of Jesus life and message as he came to embody a sacred archetype.  He epitomized the resurrecting shepherd king and his teachings are an important aspect of our lives.

Uranus is at the 0 degree known as the Aries point. This much awaited event in the astrological world has more than lived up to it’s name thus far. Celeste Teal published the most widly quoted explanation of Uranus in Aries at the Aries point, also known as the ‘world point.’ ’A sudden outpouring of energies, indicative of involvement with the world at large.’

The energy of the upcoming full moon in Virgo has played a role in Japan’s tragedy, as well. This full moon has been described as an ‘extreme supermoon’ because on March 19 the moon will swing more closely to the earth than it has in the past 18 years. March’s full moon occurs on Saturday March 19^th at 2:10 P.M. EST at 28 degrees Virgo 48 minutes. Full moon energy can be felt before the peak occurs as well as after. The 29^th degree is a significant one and every full moon since October has been at that significant degree. The 29^th degree is about change. This full moon causes conflicts with several planets, including Uranus, the planet/agent of disruption. As the full moon approaches we will see more events fitting this description.

Neptune, known as the water-bearer is currently in the 29^th degree of Aquarius. The ground is littered with victims in the Middle East. As the victim toll in Japan reaches 10,000 at the time of this publication, all eyes are off Libya where a crazed dictator cleans up the streets and tells the world he never massacred civilians while the UN debates the legalities of intervention. The Arab League ministers voted to ask the UN to impose a no fly zone over Libya, but to the civilians under siege in that civil war torn country this may seem to be too little, too late. Author Celeste Teal states the 29^th degree is the weakest point of the sign it is occupying and often complicates decision making matters.

On March 18-19, Mercury opposes Saturn. This is a transit indicative of arguments, power struggles in the world, and accidents. It is oriented toward very serious issues and we will see this play out on a world level with debates, arguments and more negative news. We will hear news from governments around the world.

As the full moon peaks on the 19^th it opposes Uranus within one degree. This will create sudden, unexpected situations that may involve weather and water related occurrences. Mercury-Saturn plays into the picture as well, creating dangerous situations around the world that occur at the last minute. March 21-22 the Sun conjuncts Uranus, a transit indicative of sudden, explosive situations, accidents and explosions that could involve fire. March 28-29 the Sun squares Pluto. Pluto is a ruthless planet and describes the ‘status quo, as well as oil. Pluto also rules nuclear weapons and substances. We will hear more at this time about Japan’s nuclear plant crisis, and oil. Prices may go up, and oil will become a major issue throughout 2011. Sun/Pluto is explosive and relates to power struggles of all types, as well as struggles against the current power structure. Pluto rules the media as well, and no doubt reporters will be at the forefront during this time.

Jupiter opposes Saturn the last two weeks of March. This transit is indicative of restriction, delays, obstacles, negative movement in financial markets and gridlock among governments, especially the US. Decisions will be difficult to make and movement may come to a virtual standstill.

As Mercury retrogrades in Aries on March 30, it does so in the sign ruling the individual (as well as collective) ego. At this time, we will have an opportunity to re-evaluate the actions of the recent past. Actions will be slowed, but in positive light decisions can be rethought. On the other hand, hasty decisions can be made without thought of consequences, and thinking may not be clear.

The New Moon/solar eclipse falls at 13 degrees of Capricorn on January 4 at 4:03 AM, EST. Capricorn is the natural ruler of the 10th house of business and priorities. The eclipse squares Saturn, the taskmaster, bringing a dose of reality, responsibility and obligations to light. Venus squares Neptune at 26 degrees of Scorpio-Aquarius, and this transit is indicative of fraud, mistruths and lies relating to money and sex. It points toward issues between the sexes and news relating to same sex couplings as well.

Capricorn rules the earth as well as business, and issues will come to light that relate to the earth itself. We must listen to the planet speak, as it is the sustenance of all life in our world. 2010’s catastrophic earthquake in Haiti preceded the January 15 eclipse in Capricorn by 3 days. It will retrograde back into Sagittarius at 29 degrees on December 19, and it will turn stationary direct at 19 degrees December 19- January 1, 2011, going direct on December 30. The planet of communication retrogrades 3 or 4 times each year. During this time equipment breaks down, miscommunication occurs, situations breakdown, delays occur, relationships break up, and people from the past, as well as situations from the past occasionally reappear.

It is wise not to make major decisions, buy high ticket items, make commitments, start a job, get married or sign contracts during this time. This theory has been tested many times over—by me!. Act now and you will regret it later, if you can avoid doing so! Occasionally, this can work in your favor, but as a rule it is best to be aware of the ramifications of this energy and act accordingly. Retrograde Mercury is a time of re-accessing situations, people, jobs, bank accounts and any number of other things.

There may be a strong need to communicate your ideas with Mercury stationing in Sagittarius, and there is also an inclination to exaggerate and elaborate on your ideas.” Mercury does not return to full steam ahead until it reaches the degree at which it turned retrograde, 5 degrees in Capricorn. We do not get back to this degree until January 18, which is the perfect time to initiate your new business endeavors and matters of priority, and move forward full steam ahead for 2011.

Welcome to Summer 2010. Monday, June 21, marked the Summer solstice and the beginning of the Sun’s 29 day trek through the fourth sign of the zodiac, Cancer. This week is possibly one of the most astrologically significant of the year as it is the prelude to the summer eclipses. This week’s full moon/lunar eclipse is at 4 degrees of Capricorn, occurring on June 26. The new moon/solar eclipse is at 21 degrees of Cancer, and occurs on July 11.

Capricorn/Cancer are cardinal signs and the natural rulers of the 4^th and 10 houses of the zodiac, the houses representing business and priorities, the home and foundation and the homeland.

The full moon/eclipse is conjunct Pluto. Pluto is the planet of vengeance, ruling control and the dark and hidden undercurrents of life. This will create intensity within everything we do. Nothing will be surface level, and previously unknown events will begin to unfold.

The eclipse sets off the cardinal T-Square astrologers have been writing about for some time now. When Saturn re-enters Libra on July 22 it will oppose Uranus, the planet of unexpected events, and Pluto will square Saturn and Uranus (a square is a 90 degree angle representing struggles) in an astrological formation known as a T-Square. This T-square between 3 major planets will deal with departures from established ways of doing things, struggle, and control. Uranus promises unexpected situations that may include explosions, changes in government, hostilities and accidents. Pluto in Capricorn relates to business, banking, oil and the earth itself. We are already seeing events that relate to this extraordinary planetary configuration unfold in the news as we watch the situation in the Gulf and the ever growing oil spill with no concrete plan of stopping it. It will be a busy week on the world stage and in our lives. As we approach the end of the week, the flowing planetary configurations are occurring:

June 21-23 The Sun enters Cancer squaring Uranus at 0 degrees of Aries. This transit precedes the eclipse and holds the potential for unexpected events of a shocking, explosive nature. Uranus is the planet of revolution, change, and rules weather, airplanes, electricity and revolutions. It is an unpredictable energy that can go in many different directions.

June 23-Sun squares Jupiter/Uranus- Information gets blown out of proportion. It is not considered a financially favorable transit. News about government and governments, as well as education, and foreign people will dominate the news.

June 24-Mercury squares Saturn- This is a negative, heavy and depressing transit and it is easy to see only the negative. It is likely we will hear bad news, and the potential exists for accidents. It is detail oriented, but prone to arguments and bickering.

The full moon lunar eclipse this month occurs on June 26, 7:30 AM, EST at 4 degrees of Capricorn. Capricorn is the natural ruler of the tenth house of business and priorities, and things related to the earth. Its ruler is Saturn, the planet of structure and stability. Numerous other planets are playing a role in this eclipse making it worthy of our attention, interest and caution.

The full moon is conjunct Pluto, the planet known as ‘The God of the Underworld.’ Pluto rules oil, power struggles, control and the dark and hidden undercurrents as well as events and situations that are previously hidden. We may be certain the media will play a role in events that transpire. There will be a focus on health, transportation and communications.

Discontent will permeate society, and there is a theme of obsession, conspiracies, coercive tactics and danger. The Moon/Pluto conjunction opposes the Sun and Mercury, and squares Jupiter and Uranus. The potential exists for security around the world to be undermined and we may see events related to the earth itself, accidents, and situations that threaten stability and planet Earth. They are proven liars whose only bottom line involves a dollar, and avoidance of responsibility. US lawmakers and Congress has failed to act as well, allowing offshore drilling without proper safety devices in place, to shut off an oil pipeline under catastrophic circumstances such as we are facing. It didn’t have to unfold this way.
